BankID was launched in 2004. Today, it is used by all banks in the country, the public sector and a growing number of private businesses. The Norwegian banks have developed BankID together, and it is the banks who issue BankID to private customers.
BankID BankAxept AS maintain and develop the service, and sells BankID to Norwegian businesses through a system of resellers.
The work to develop BankID as a shared infrastructure began in the late 1990s, and in 2004, the first customers received BankID. In 2014, BankID Norge AS was established with responsibility for communication, branding, operations, development, and sales to user sites.
In 2018, BankID, Vipps, and BankAxept were merged into one joint company. BankID and BankAxept were demerged from Vipps on July 19, 2022, and established as a separate company, BankID BankAxept AS.
